Ethics Advisory Committee

Opinion 93-15

Question

Is it proper for an appellate court to accept a complimentary set of Washington Case Law in a CD Rom format with the appropriate software from the publisher? If so, may an individual judge accept a complimentary CD Rom for home use?

Answer

CJC Canon 5(C)(4)(a) provides that judicial officers may accept books supplied to them by publishers on a complimentary basis for official use. Therefore, an appellate court may accept a publisher's complimentary set of Washington Law in CD Rom format. An individual judge may accept a complimentary CD Rom for home if it is for official use.
